South Africa
Hallo!
South Africa is known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural diversity and offers a unique and enriching experience for exchange students. Its blend of African, European, and Asian influences makes it a melting pot of cultures, providing students with a broad perspective on different ways of life.
Language RequirementS
There are no language requirements to go on exchange to South Africa.
School
The academic year is split into four terms, typically starting in mid-January and ending in early December with breaks in between.
Students take a range of compulsory subjects, including languages, mathematics and life orientation, and choose elective subjects based on their interests and career goals. In grades 10 to 12, students specialize more in their chosen subjects.
There is an emphasis on critical thinking, problem-solving, and preparation for tertiary education or vocational training. Interactive and participatory methods are encouraged to engage students fully. Most South African schools require students to wear uniforms.
Family
Family life in South Africa is diverse. South African families are known for their warmth, hospitality, and strong sense of community. Exchange students can expect to be welcomed into the family and participate in daily routines and special gatherings, which may include attending family events and possibly engaging in community service. Families in South Africa value spending time together, whether it’s sharing meals, attending church, or enjoying outdoor activities.
Teenagers in South Africa enjoy spending time with friends and engaging in extracurricular activities such as sports, arts, and music. Teenagers also have unique opportunities to explore nature, including beaches, mountains, and national parks.
Volunteer Programs
This program offers young people aged 18 or older, the opportunity to participate in a wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation programme. It is a unique way to discover South Africa, expand your horizon, discover a new culture and gain practical experience in the fields of nature conservation, animal rescue and wildlife rehabilitation while being supported by YFU.
Volunteers are placed at a seabird and penguin rescue and rehabilitation centre located on the outskirts of Cape Town, where they assist with a variety of tasks. You will have the opportunity to explore South Africa’s diverse culture and beautiful nature, and are invited to participate in local YFU activities.
